Our innovative training programme will give you a mix of interdisciplinary, externally relevant data intensive science skills, appropriate domain-specific knowledge and professional/personal development skills.
The majority of the PhD programme will involve the carrying out of original research, leading to specialised knowledge and skills. Research projects mainly relate to particle physics and astronomy, but there are other big data projects on a range of subjects.
The primary taught components are residential schools covering professional skills and data specific training (see below). Students will also be able to access a range of training through GRADnet .
Real-world experience will be gained from industry placements and there will be other opportunities to engage with industry.
DISCnet runs an annual showcase event and bespoke professional skills development training. These face-to-face events offer an opportunity to network with our industry partners, meet employers offering placements, and hear about placement projects from our alumni.
The training sessions include:
The art of networking
Showcasing your skills and experience for employers
Negotiating your first salary
Data science CV surgery
We are developing additional workshops and welcome suggestions for new events.
